Organisation
Founded in 1971, BMI-SBI is a limited company, with 63% of its capital held by the Belgian Government through the Belgian Federal Participation and Investment Company (Société Fédérale de Participations et d’Investissement -SFPI / Federale Participatie- en Investeringsmaatschappij - FPIM) and the National Bank of Belgium and 37% held by banking institutions and other private companies.
Its registered capital amounts to € 33 million.
BMI-SBI's financial means can, in certain cases, be leveraged with considerable external financing capacities. It has received two endowments from the federal government and has concluded cooperation agreements with both the Flemish (PMV) and Walloon government (AWEX).
BMI-SBI also has privileged contacts with a number of international and supranational institutions (the IFC, EIB and EBRD). Through EDFI - an association of 16 European development finance institutions - it has access, indirectly, to the considerable financial means of its members. Several larger Belgian projects of a larger scale have already been co-financed by DEG, the German Development Corporation .
BMI-SBI contributes with the Belgian Government to development cooperation projects through its subsidiary, BIO (Belgian Investment Company for Developing Countries). As the investment strategy of this subsidiary differs significantly from BMI-SBI's, the two entities operate independently.
